Week 7 CIS237 Blogger

Guest Speaker

I always thought having a guest speaker is a real treat to have offered in the course. I hadn't really thought of how to do it online but I thought I would try with the help of Skype.

The guest speaker I would like would be Shelley Rodrigo and the topic online technology. The tool to use for this is skype.

I don't have skype down pat yet, but this is what I would like to say:
Hi everyone, this is sue your instructor for NCE259 and today I would like to introduce you to a very special guest speaker. Her name is Shelley Rodrigo and she is going to briefly speak to us today about online technology using blogs, wiki's, and creating an igoogle account for your online classes. Welcome, Shelley I'm glad you could join us.........

Week 6 Assessment Data

This week I would like to share an example of how I use Clinical Vignettes or short stories as a way of assessing critical thinking skills.

You are a float nurse to the ICU and one of your assignments is to take care of Mr. Jonas, age 78, who has cirrhosis of the liver secondary to alcoholism. You take a minute to review Mr. Jonas plan of care, his chart orders, and daily lab data for the last 3 day's trends. You understand his CBC results, but have forgotten the liver function test norms. Listed are aspartate aminotransferase (AST) and aminotransferase (ALT). Not only do you need to know what this ratio means, but you need to know how best to treat this patient. What can you tell us about these ratios and what resources will you utilize to help with your day, in the most time efficient way. He already has his call light on.

Blogger 6 CIS237

Hi everyone,
This week we viewed material that can be useable in our classes without recreating everything from scratch. I think my favorite one was Merlot. It had a specific area for nursing with some material such as heart and lung sounds and cranial nerve information. It's always good to have extra resources to go to for teaching. I tagged what I liked and added it to delicious for future use.
I also downloaded shutterfly to my computer just for the fun of it.

Hi everyone,
This week we are going to look at video's that could help us with our coursework. I have been hearing quite a lot of bits and pieces about second life. I watched a blog on second life explaining how it can help in teaching and it sounds like it could be interesting. Here is a video introducing a portion of second life and nursing. undefined/video/video/show?id=undefined

Week 4 Blog

Week 3 Blog

Today I was thinking of all of the new things I have learned in our technology and teaching class. Shelley is doing such a fine job, I was wondering if it ever really has to end. This is the type of class I would like to keep going with (with a few breaks in between) to actually get a chance to use the technology and get more familiar with it. I feel really blessed to be able to take this course.
Jing was something new for me this week. Some of the pages were down, but I was able to at least start using it - way cool.

Time is flying....... til next time. suecat

CIS237 Week 3 Blog

Hi Everyone

I'm sharing one of my beautiful cat's named Jelli. I'm not trying to copy - just giving credit to her for letting me use her picture. This class has helped me so much - I'm just amazed and grateful at the information I can now use. I feel really slow at all this - but I just keep trying and eventually I think I will get better with time.

I really like all the applications I have learned about so far in google. I'm very impressed with the site.

I will be developing an advanced critical care course for nursing continuing education for Gateway Community College. I have found a scholarly blog on critical care nursing. I also have added an RSS feed on critical care via google reader - way cool.

I can hardly drag myself away from the computer these days - can anyone else relate to this?

Communication via the internet

OK, so communicating via the internet is enormous. I chose this picture because we can communicate all over the world. It's amazing. You can be anywhere, anytime, almost lost on the internet - there is so much to experience. The time factor is a big plus to me, such as using email, instead of having to make trips to see certain people.
The bad thing about communicating via the internet is we can use this mode to not have to directly connect with other people. This could be a problem for those that are introverted. It is probable best we stay neutral and use the internet to communicate as well as connect in person. One thing I really miss is reading books because I spend so much time on the internet.
What do the rest of you think? suecat

My first blog

Hi Shelly,
This is my first blog. My gmail is suecataz@gmail.com The blogger url is something I forgot to write down so I will come back to it. I just found it - http://suecatcis237.blogspot.com (how original).

A little bit about me. I am a nurse and work for gateway community college continuing education. I put together a hemodynamic on line 1 credit course and am currently working (slowly) on an advanced critical care course on line. I am saying slowly, because it is hard to stay motivated - this course is a 4 credit course and needs to be done by early fall. I hope I can do it.

Please let me know if you read this. Ist blog. suecat
